The Integration of Values and Concept of Local Wisdom, Multicultural, and Water and Sanitation Management into Learning Process: (Integrative Curriculum)
Background
Responding to emergency and crisis situation in Aceh's education post tsunami in 2005, SEAMEO has designed assistance programs carried out by many of its centers under the umbrella of SEAMEO HELP for Aceh. As such, SEAMOLEC, in collaboration with Deutsche Bank, has offered a program "Alternative Curriculum Development for Aceh" to assist teachers in Aceh to integrate water and sanitation management, local wisdom, and multiculture into their curriculum and teaching and learning practices. It is believed that such a capacity building program by SEAMOLEC will equip teachers in Aceh to be professional teachers in the field.
Issues and water and sanitation management are of high importance to Aceh in its post tsunami situation. Clean and healthy water, which is vital for human survival, has become expensive commodity in Aceh post tsunami. Aceh people should make a special effort in conserving water and also sanitation are indeed necessary, and needed to into the curriculum allows teachers to teach water and sanitation management across subject matters as early as possible.
Issues on local wisdom and multiculture are substantial for Aceh, especially after its exposure to various different culture of development agencies coming in to Aceh post tsunami. The moment is highly strategic for introduction the perspectives on global issues and at the same time strengthening nationalism, and also preserving the local culture. The integration of local wisdom and multiculture into the curriculum allows teachers to establish awareness among students on their own culture and identity while acknowledging various other culture from different people in Indonesia as well as in the global world. The nurturance of these local wisdom and multiculture knowledge is expected to develop tolerance and sense of harmony in the heart of every students in Aceh.
The program on development of alternative curriculum has been carried out by SEAMOLEC involving Ministry of National Education of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Syiah Kuala University, and teachers in Aceh since 2006. This One Day International Seminar is designed to demonstrates showcase and best practices of Aceh teachers in integrating water and sanitation management, local wisdom, and multiculture into their curriculum and teaching and learning practices. Overall, the seminar will disseminate information and results of program on alternative curriculum development to educational community and stakeholders in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

Objective
The seminar is designed to be a forum of exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and discussion among various representatives from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam teachers, experts, and practitioners in the area of education, focusing on instructional development.
Especially, this seminar is intended to:

  • present the result of integrative curriculum which has been conducted for 1 (one) year in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam and facilitated by SEAMEO SEAMOLEC and Deutsche Bank.
  • present award to the teachers as the best practices

Seminar Theme
The seminar theme is "developing human resources in Aceh to preserve cultural environment and the healthy environment to achieve sustainable development for all".

Sub Theme :

  • The Concept Integrative Curriculum in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.
  • Integration of the concepts and values of Local Wisdom (LW), Multicultural (MC), and Water and Sanitation Management into the topics of school curriculum.

Time and Venue
The seminar will be conducted on commemoration of the 11th anniversary of SEAMEO SEAMOLEC on 27 February 2008 in Grand Naggroe Hotel, Jl. Tgk. Imam Lueng Bata, Banda Aceh.

The audiences of the seminar will be participated 120 persons included various representatives from Nangroe Aceh Darussalam teachers, experts, and practitioners in the area of education. As details audiences involves:

  1. Ministry of National Education
  2. Ministry of National Education in Aceh Province
  3. Ministry of National Education in Aceh Districts
  4. SyiahKuala University
  5. Head of MONE in 12 Districts/Kabupaten in Aceh
  6. School headmaster that involved in the program
  7. School teachers that involved in the program
  8. Non Government Organization (NGO) and the institutional representatives from Aceh
  9. Deustch Bank as a sponsor of program

The speakers in this seminar involve:

  1. Prof. Dr. Bambang Sudibyo (Minister of Indonesia National Education) as keynote speaker
  2. Prof. Syamsu Rizal (Rector of Unsyiah University)
  3. Prof. Paulina Pannen (SEAMOLEC director interim)
  4. School teachers who get the award

Schedule
The time schedule consists of two sessions i.e.: The plenary session and the panel session.
