Vision: To be a Centre of Expertise in Open and Distance Learning

UniSIM System

UniSIM System

UniSIM does not practice an open access system as open universities generally do. Students must be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of 2 levels or their equivalent. More than 85% of the successful applicants for the January 2006 admissions are diploma holders from the local polytechnics. UniSIM currently has 5665 students with an average age of 31 years old and having an average work experience of 7 years.

UniSIM adopted flexible open learning as the principal delivery mode and students can choose the mode of study that best suit their needs. The course materials are designed to enable self-studying even though students have access to face-to-face lectures and tutorials. This allows students the flexibility of having regular face-to-face classes or independent self-study or a blend of both. Tutorial-group size is deliberately kept small. Although attendance at these face-to-face sessions is not mandatory, a majority of the students do attend the classes, partly because they find them useful and partly because within the Singapore context, where distances and transport are not a problem, it is easy to attend the evening classes. Other learning support includes multi-media, audio-visual and online materials, and e-mail and discussion forums. Students are assessed via regular assignments and an end of term examination or project.
