In today’s educational landscape, distance learning has become a key approach to support learning flexibility. By implementing distance learning, teachers and students can move beyond the limitations of conventional face-to-face models, overcoming distance and time constraints. Through digital platforms, students gain broader access to education, interactive materials, and cutting-edge technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), making learning more engaging and effective.
Recognizing this need, Universitas Bina Bangsa (UNIBA) in Serang, Banten, has introduced distance learning methods. To support this transition, SEAMEO SEAMOLEC is providing training to enhance distance learning through the “Presentation Design and Educational Video-Based Micro Media” program. The training is conducted entirely online, allowing participants to experience the latest digital platforms and technology.
The opening ceremony was held on October 23, 2024, beginning with remarks by the chief executive, Hilman, M.Pd., and officially inaugurated by UNIBA Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. H. Bambang Dwi Suseno, SE, M.M. Prof. Bambang expressed his appreciation to SEAMOLEC, emphasizing the importance of future training and collaboration. This training marks the first program under SEAMOLEC’s partnership with UNIBA since their memorandum of cooperation was signed in 2021. Mr. Timbul Pardede, the training expert from SEAMOLEC, also shared the background and objectives of the program.
The training was facilitated by SEAMOLEC instructors, assisted by interns, and took place on October 23, 24, and 25, 2024. It included 40 participants from various departments at UNIBA, each representative being encouraged to share their newly gained skills with their respective departments.
The training covered several key areas. First, participants explored fundamental concepts of presentation design, focusing on effective slides for engaging presentations. Participants then worked on developing a storyline that included time planning and key content. Padlet, a collaborative digital platform, was introduced as a space for participants to upload drafts, exchange ideas, and discuss assignments. One participant remarked that Padlet would be a valuable tool for her online class because of its simplicity and ease of use.
Next, participants were introduced to presentation design principles and practiced creating designs using Canva, a popular digital platform known for its vast selection of templates. The training also introduced several AI-powered tools for automatic speech-to-text transcription and background removal.
One of the participants posed an insightful question: “How important are visuals in presentations? I usually focus more on the content when teaching.” While content is undoubtedly essential, it’s equally important to consider the students’ perspective; boring presentations can often lead to disengagement. Video presentations with appealing visuals and well-designed slides can enhance student motivation and help convey learning points more effectively in online learning environments.
