SEAMEO Regional Open Learning Centre (SEAMOLEC) successfully hosted a webinar titled “Be Smart with Information: Integrating Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Indonesian Schools” on Friday, 11 October 2024, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM (GMT+7). The webinar was streamed live on SEAMOLEC’s YouTube channel, attracting over 75 live participants and gaining 437 views after being uploaded.
The webinar opened with a warm welcome from SEAMOLEC’s Director, Dr. Wahyudi, followed by an opening speech from Prof. Titjik Sri Tjahjandarie, Ph.D., Acting Secretary of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology. The event was moderated by Febriyani Hidayati, an intern from the Vocational School of the University of Indonesia (UI).
Four experienced speakers from different backgrounds shared their insights during the session: Mrs. Rismanta Silalahi, S.Sos., M.Si. from Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ) highlighted the importance of media literacy for students in the digital age. Mr. Aribowo Sasmito, founder of Masyarakat Antifitnah Indonesia (Mafindo), presented practical tips on detecting hoaxes with his talk, “Hoax Detection: An Easy Way to Become an Independent Anti-Hoax Advocate.” Mrs. Siti Amalia, from SMPN 6 Bogor, shared how Media Information Literacy (MIL) can help students solve real-world math problems with her presentation, “Smart Generation: Using MIL to Solve Everyday Math Problems.” Mr. Daniel E. Latumaerissa, S.Pd., M.Si.D. from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) spoke about “Introducing MIL to Schools: From Teacher Communities to Daily Classroom Practices.”
The sharing session, moderated by Mrs. Tri Kurnia Revul Andina, S.I.P., M.A. from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), featured lively discussions. Each speaker received thoughtful questions related to their expertise and presentations. This webinar provided participants with valuable insights into media literacy, hoax prevention, and practical strategies for integrating MIL into schools across Indonesia.
