Teacher Workshop and Student Video Competition Vaccines: Fighting Disease

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for STEM Education,  or SEAMEO STEM-ED seeks to develop the capacity of educators in the region as well as  innovative learning resources and education tools. With the recent COVID-19 pandemic it urges  to develop a better understanding about microbes causing disease, the body's immune system  and the means of fighting disease with vaccines among teachers and students.  

The Centre has collaborated with Dr. Margaret Whalley, an eminent microbiologist who has long  experience of scientific research and teaching in microbiology and the Sirindhorn Science Home,  National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) to organize the programme  Teacher Workshop and Student Video Competition on Vaccines: fighting disease. The  programme consists of 2 phases: 

1. On-line Teacher Workshop 

  • To provide background information for teachers of lower secondary level students  on microbes causing disease, the body's immune system and the means of fighting  disease with vaccines. 
  • To enable teachers to support their students entering the competition Vaccines:  fighting disease

2. Student Video Competition 

  • To produce a video for use in social media explaining to teenagers, in easily  understood terms, (a) the body's immune response and (b) how vaccines work and  how they control disease in children.  

B: Objectives  

This programme aims to increase understanding among teenagers of how vaccines work and  how they are used to control disease in children.  

C: Expected Participants 

The expected number of participants are approximately 220 teachers participating in the  Workshop and 220 entries for Student Video Competition from the region.

E: Dates 

  • On-line Teacher Workshop: 20, 21, 27, 28 February 2023 14:00 - 17:00 hrs [Bangkok  Time, GMT+7] 
  • Video submission deadline: 16 April 2023 
  • Winners Announcement: 1 June 2023 

F: Prizes 

  • Three winners will receive the "Winner Certificate" and the following prizes: o 1st Prize: USD400  
    o 2nd Prize: USD300 
    o 3rd Prize: USD200 
  • All contestants will receive the "Certificate of Completion" upon submission of the  qualified videos.
